County Seat – Clarksdale

 

Named for Indian word "Co-i-humma" meaning red panther

 

Formed February 9, 1836

 

Encompasses 357,760 acres or 559 square miles

 

Population 30,622

 

Climate:

Average normal temperatures in January is 41 degrees and 83 degrees in July.  Total normal rainfall is 51.19 inches.  Estimated average snowfall is 2-3".  Prevailing wind is southwest.  Average elevation is 175 ft.

 

Coahoma County is governed by a five-person Board of Supervisors.  The supervisors are publicly elected but designate their own president.

Location: Clarksdale is situated onlyan hour south of Memphis, TN, the distribution capital of the United States.  Coahoma County offers a direct four-lane connection to Memphis via U.S. Highway 61 and will sit squarely aside Interstate 69, America's next big corridor of commerce, when it connects Indianapolis with Mexico.

 

Highways: Clarksdale is served by 2 U.S. Highways and 3 State Highways.  It is 75 miles south of the intersection of Interstate 55 and Interstate 40, and Interstate 55 also runs 35 miles east of Clarksdale.
